Recount on Issue A in Lafayette

That's right, its not over yet. Read it here. Karen Norback has gotten the city to admit there were protocol and equipment failures in the tallying of the votes. What's going on here? One word - Diebold. Even though the vote apparently turned out how I wanted, I am totally in support of looking into the equipment concerns she has raised.

Search Diebold and "fraud" or "flaws" and you'll find plenty to raise eyebrows.

Hanging chads, check.

Let me display incredible ignorance of the election process by asking why a machine is necessary at all. For reference, especially with bigger elections, with more complicated ballots, I can see the many reasons to audit the equipment failures. However, for Issue A, can't we just put the Yes votes in one pile, the No votes in another, and count them up? The City Clerk could probably provide the technical answer to this question - I'm sure there is one - but can there be any serious concern that the validity of the election results were compromised?

I'm sure the voters would love it if we had to do this all over again. It seems extremely unlikely to me, and any difference in result would just end up being the net of more time to campaign less voter disgust with whomever ends up taking the blame for triggering another chapter in the ordeal.

To put it candidly.

I agree, this is too simple to let a machine mess it up. Why did they spend $23K on machines, when 2 or 3 people could have counted? It will be interesting to see if anything changes, but unlikely.

Interesting to see the original post buying into the self promoting Ms. Norback's hype of herself as the Most Influential Citizen in Lafayette. Way I read it the City Clerk called the recount and got Diebold to do it on Diebold's dime. If Ms. Norback had triggered the recount she or her organization would have been on the hook for the costs, so I guess the City did her a favor. Anyway, check the City's website, the results are in and no change in the outcome.

Did Karen Norback really call herself the Most Influential Citizen in Lafayette? I missed that.
