Wow, the reality of a vacated County Commissioner seat - following the passing of Tom Mayer Friday - shows even on Sunday there's no downtime for the politically ambitious. The Camera has an article about the various folks who may rise to the top of the Democratic Party's list to be named on the ballot. This has to happen by July 2. I notice Lafayette Councilor Frank Phillips has endorsed Lafayette Mayor Chris Berry on the Camera's website.
I encourage astute political wonks such as EastBoCo readers to lobby for that spot. Although for many of you that means revealing your secret identity. But oh, the power and the glory!
Welcome!

Should be interesting to see how the Dems work in Boulder County. Cindy Domenico, the county assessor, is the only one on the list that has been elected county wide and has that kind of name recognition.
Council Phillips endorsement is an interesting turn of events since he opposed Mayor Berry when the council voted two years ago. His commentary at the time was quite critical of Mayor Berry as well.
does anyone know what the commissioners make? is it a full time job?
This is from the Colorado Daily today:
Said Robin Bohannan, Director of Community Services, Boulder County, “Tom was the ‘Angel of Change' who pushed against the status quo, or the voice of ‘we can't do that.' Tom showed us many ways we could change our community for the better.
Hopefully his replacement will inspire similar sentiment.
An endorsement of Berry by Phillips? Can a Cameron endorsement of Bensman be far behind?
Let's suppose the mayor is appointed commissioner and resigns by the end of July:
" Any vacancy which occurs in the Council more than ninety (90) days before the next regular city election shall be filled within thirty (30) days by a majority vote of the remaining members of the Council, said appointee to hold office until the Monday following such election, at which election such vacancy shall be filled as provided in Section 3.2. for any balance of the unexpired original term."
The new appointtee would serve out the Mayor's term or until the beginning of November. Could run as an incumbent.
The council would need to vote on a new mayor to serve until the next election.
Wow, I don't smoke cigars. The smoke filled back room politics could get interesting, don't you think??? (Maybe the smoke isn't from cigars after all.)
Or has it already started? I'll be the last to know.
We really could use an EastBoCo voice. Chris would provide that. So would Don Brown. In fact, Cindy Domenico would give a county-wide perspective having served as Assessor. Just don't want a City of Boulder wannabe.
Dems will decide with little thought to EastBoCo needs. Although he/she must live in District 3, the selected replacement will be the one who commits to furthering Dem ideals throughout the county, and the one who is re-electable when the time comes.
Of all the names mentioned in the article, the only one I'd oppose is Barbara Connors. She recently stated the proposed size limits in the County were not restrictive enough. She was vocally anti-growth while Mayor of Erie. She didn't want to manage growth, she wanted to stop it. The height of hypocrisy as she lives in a typical suburban sprawl neighborhood that's less than 10 years old. We need someone with more vision than "I'm here, let's close the doors."
It will be an east county person, the replacement would need to come from Tom Mayer's district I beleive. I agree that Cindy Domenico would be a good choice.
Councilor Bensman once again spins conspiracies where there are non. He forgot to mention that I endorsed Mayor Barry when he ran for State Senate. Mayor Barry is regionalist and I am not, and do not believe that this viewpoint is the best strategy for Lafayette's development in the near future. I have some differences with Mayor Berry, and probably will continue to do so. Conversely Mayor Berry's regionalistic views are highly appropriate at the County Comissioner level, and I have no qualms endorsing him for this. On the other hand, I would never endorse Councilor Bensman for anything, regardless of what we agree or don't agree on.
Dreamer - being an east county person and being an east county voice are two different things. No question this person will live in EastBoCo, but they need to think EastBoCo when dealing with County matters.
Cindy will get the nod anyway. Lafyette can revel in staus quo through November.
Will she be a good EastBoCo voice?
What is a "good" East Boulder County voice? I'm sure your opinion and my opinion would look quite differnt on this issue. I'd be interested in hearing what others would like the new Comissioner to do for East Boulder County. What isn't happening now that you would like to see? Let's remember that they represent the whole county and not just their home turf.
So Councilor Phillips suggest I see conspiracy theories everywhere. Why his reaction? I'm surprise Dan caught it as I would not have checked the DC article on the internet for it.
How can citing from the city's municipal code be interpreted as looking for a conspiracy? Folks on this blog should find how this all works of interest, especially since Dan posted the endorsement when he posted the topic.
Is there anyone besides me who finds it somewhat disturbing that all these candidates were jumping into the contest and responding to the press within 48 hours of Tom Mayer's passing? And are we to believe that when his illness became debilitating that the phones did not start lighting up in Boulder County Dem country?
I would contend that the new commissioner should be examined in the light of what s(he) would do for Lafayette as a primary consideration. This city needs more than the commissioners coming to town once a year to get a meal at taxpayer's expense.
The only endorsement I have ever needed is from the voters of Lafayette. And I continue to be grateful for their continued support and compliments for the past 3+ years.
Don Brown just retrieved his hat from the ring (per Camera)
This is good news for the City of Louisville as he is needed now more than ever.
Daily Camera today:
Paul Weissmann has jumped in to the "race".
Well councilor Bensman, when you use terms like "Smoke Filled Back room politics" and I quote from your prior blog comment:
"The new appointtee (sic) would serve out the Mayor's term or until the beginning of November. Could run as an incumbent. The council would need to vote on a new mayor to serve until the next election.
Wow, I don't smoke cigars. The smoke filled back room politics could get interesting, don't you think??? (Maybe the smoke isn't from cigars after all.) Or has it already started? I'll be the last to know."
How exactly would you describe that type of language?
The phrase "smoked filled rooms" came from the days when party bosses would gather to determine who would be nominated and who would be elected. Supposedly in Chicago, this would happen at the Blackstone Hotel.
From Wikipedia:
More specifically, the hotel known for contributing the term "smoke-filled room" to political parlance.[4]
I was referencing what was going on with the Dems in Boulder County during the past week. But to me, when Mayor Berry was elected mayor the last time, there had been an e-mail version of the backroom. Councillor Phillips should know.
