Rudy: "Freedom is about Authority"

"We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again...as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority.. What we don't see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority.." Yikes! This man wants to be president?!

Yikes is right. Many people will read this and agree. Worse yet, many more will read it and have no reaction whatsoever. One thing freedom requires is a constant vigilance against those who would chip away at our freedoms for the sake of some "common good".

What authority? Whatever the majority wants? Thomas Jefferson wrote that majority rights can't exist if individual rights don't exist. The Founding Fathers were fearful that majority rule would oppress the freedom of the individual. We've slowly backed away from those concepts, but don't admit it.

The smoking ban is an example. Poof, the rights of 20% of the population taken away. As well as the rights of the property owners. Wasn't even a vote of the people, just action by the statehouse. How is this different from Hugo Chavez taking back the oilfields of Venezuela? He did it for the sake of the people.

Boulder County will soon impose size restrictions on residential buildings. Another example of lost individual freedoms for some "common good". In this case, the commissioners can't even come up with a plainly stated "common good". Just smacks of tyranny.

But, the people will allow it. Many more townies than rural county folk. So, once again the majority will exercise tyranny over the minority and take away rights.

Most people are in denial that these things jeopardize our future as a country. As long as we have jobs and food on the table, things must be OK.

How does he say freedom is about individual responsibility and yet imply more authority is a key component? What is he talking about? He's a prosecutor at heart - not just in the professinal career sense. He wants to inflict authority on people in advance, before they've had a chance to exercise personal freedom and responsibility. Fascist.

Let's face it--our county commissioners are big government advocates who want to control EVERYTHING.

As Ronald Reagan said:
Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
