From the Denver Post:
A group of Longmont residents begin today to try to block a massive church-sponsored housing and retail development they claim will tarnish the city for generations. They hope to collect 4,021 valid signatures in 21 days in an effort to overturn the LifeBridge Christian Church's 348-acre Union project. The City Council approved the annexation and development of Union on Aug. 14.
But if enough credible signatures are presented to the council by the end of September, council members must either repeal its earlier approval or put the church's plan before voters in a special election. "Longmont has never really had a successful referendum, but at the least, we are hoping the City Council notes what we're doing here," said Jen Gartner, a petition-drive organizer.
If this is on the Times-Call's website, I couldn't find it in the sea of multi-colored/sized/shaped ads they've chosen to be the focus of their recently revamped online presence.

never seems to get mentioned - you can find all the background you'd ever want as well as lists of signing locations (and maps to them).
As for the Times-Call's 'website' - well... no RSS feed says it all.
Just curious, what kind of difference in scale/numbers is there between what has been approved by Weld County and what is being proposed in Longmont?
The Times-Call ran a story on it today (9/6/07), here's the link:

and a fairly blistering response from Mayor Pirnack, which I can't find a link to.
The question I've always had about this was the fact it's in Weld Co. and they already approved it. Mayor Pirnack addressed this - and I'd like to hear the anti-Union people respond to it: Fiction: Voting against Union by council or in a special election (costing $50,000-plus) will stop the project. Fact: The project already has approval to develop in Weld County. If not annexed to Longmont, Union residents will use our services, but we will not receive property or use taxes, building permit fees, or a valuable, strategic water right.
I've fought in the past to try to get things on the ballot, or at least more public involvement and input, but if the above is true, what's the point of this ballot initiative drive? Also, to the people trying to get signatures, if this is true, are you mentioning that to potential signers of the petition?
Here's the deal: Without Longmont's city water and sewar, Lifebridge would be in trouble. They can still develop - with WELL AND SEPTIC. This would lower the housing density significantly for septic fields and wells. In addition, the sports arena and commercial space would be in doubt - sports events NEED water and sewar. Imagine a septic field designed to handle 10,000 fans, or 8000 congregation members every Sunday. Longmont had a massive upper hand, but insiders sold out taxpayers. I'LL NOT get into the church run HOA - imagine getting kicked out of the church (Teddy the leader did in Colo Springs). You won't be able to sell you home - they'll blackball you. After all WHO else but a church member would buy a home there? Only an IDIOT would buy a home surrounded by such a powerful cult, governed by an HOA contract.
